Wednesday, 18 August 2010

celebrities robbedMillions that Hollywood stars earn every year do nothing to protect them from being robbed: despite costly security systems and elite locations of celebrity property, stars sometimes suffer million damages from the robberies.

After Lindsay Lohan's home was burglarized twice in the past four months, even the Mean Girl thinks the suspects were people she knew. A safe was ripped off the wall and nearly $2 million worth of jewelry loaned from a Beverly Hills boutique - and photos and videos of a very personal nature - were reportedly stolen in the incident last weekend. Three burglars - two female and one male - were caught on her mansion's surveillance tape. LiLo Twittered after the break-in: «that's how i know it was not a robbery. Electronics weren't taken... just things that a certain old friend knew meant a lot to me».

During the holidays last year, Paris Hilton's mansion was raided by a thief wearing a black hoodie, who escaped with nearly $2 million in jewelry, including diamonds, rings, necklaces, watches, and family heirlooms. The socialite said at the time, «I am devastated. They took items that had such sentimental value that no one will ever be able to replace».

He may have played a Pirate of the Caribbean, but Orlando Bloom had a little thief trouble of his own recently when his possessions went missing. In mid-July, at least $500,000 in jewelry, cash, and artwork were stolen from the actor, including 14 vintage watches. One of his most prized possessions - a 1950s Rolex Milgauss worn by Sean Connery in Goldfinger - was stolen from his home in the Hollywood Hills.

On May 8, the Los Angeles home of Rachel Bilson was robbed and her closet was hit especially hard. Bilson's Chanel collection, designer clothing, a huge vintage shoe collection, bags, and heirloom jewelry from her grandmother were discovered missing when the actress returned home from spending time with boyfriend Hayden Christensen in New York.

In 2004, eight pieces of jewelry were nearly stolen from Ozzy Osbourne's home when the singer was sound asleep. The robber never anticipated the singer waking up, catching him in the act, and biting off his head like a dove. The robber escaped out the first-floor window and fled the property in England. Ozzy said at the time, «I'm happy in one respect because it could have got really ugly and I'm just happy no one got injured».

Last year, Kelly Monaco's Las Vegas penthouse was broken into while she was sleeping. The General Hospital star and first Dancing With the Stars champion hid under her bed while her digs at Planet Hollywood were burgled. Apparently, it's common for robbers to pinpoint the homes of high-profile targets when they're expected out. Italian beauty Monica Bellucci was at the Cannes Film Festival this year when her Paris apartment was robbed. More than $110,000 worth of jewelry, two laptops, and her passport were stolen.

This sounds like the plot of a movie, but Charlie Chaplin's body was actually stolen from a Switzerland cemetery near the hills of Lake Geneva. In March 1978, Chaplin's grave and coffin were robbed by two Swiss motor mechanics who tried to hold the body for ransom. Chaplin's widow refused to give in to their demands, saying, «Charlie would have thought it ridiculous». The coffin was found 11 weeks later and was buried under two meters of concrete.
