 Topaz is deemed
to be discovered by sailors who shipwrecked on the small island so amazingly
called Topazon in the Red Sea, not so far away from Ethiopia. This island was always
seen magically in the fog and sailors who happened to shipwreck there,
discovered gorgeous green gems. For some longer time people believed that
topazes were able to calm the storms since these gems were first discovered by
those sailors who shipwrecked.
Yet, in the
age of great geographic discoveries everyone who planned to go by sea should
have had a topaz ring.
Though,
there was a opposing opinion that topaz was believed to be the home gem and it
was thought a bad idea to be taken for travels.
In his work
«Natural history» Pliniy described topaz as the gold gem but it appeared that
he was depicting chryzolyte but not topaz at all. Topazes come in various
colors from transparent to yellow-brown, from orange to blue, brown to
yellow-pink, green to silver. The magnificent diamond Braganda in 1680 carates
that decorated the Portuguese crown, turned out to be the topaz.
Topaz is
