Agate is one of the first minerals to be mined and used by jewelers. The history of agate goes two thousand years back evidenced by numerous antique discoveries. Jewelers of Ancient Greece and Rome practically own the technique of glyptic and carving the volumetric pictures of gods or ordinary people on semi-precious stones, they had perfect medallions, camellia and other jewels. The mineral has its name from the Greek naturalist and philosopher Theophrastos, in particular, the place of location. Around the 4th century B.C. And since then agate was mined in the territory of Ahates. Agate is developed in many places of the world, from Russia to Australia. These minerals are found where the signs of volcanic rocks are there.

However, as the scientists assume, the word agate could be from the Greek word «ahates» to mean «happy». Two cameos were found during diggings in 1952 in Carnuntum referring to the 3rd century A.D. one of them was made from blue agate to imitate the right hand keeping the ear lobe, «memory point» in Greek interpretation. There was inscription on the jewel in Greek language to mean «never forget me».
