when the manly tendencies are introduced in female clothes. Various fashion
designers when creating for women are captivated with creation of androgynous
images to match femininity and masculinity and interpretation of the tradition
clothes for men adopted for women when men’s jacket turns into the stylish
women’s coats, vests ad even cocktail dresses.
Nevertheless, the women adopted a single item from the men’s
wardrobe long time ago to enjoy till now that is the business dandy suit. Being
the essential ensemble for the successful businesswoman and undeniable
recognizable symbol of power and authority, the dandy sit takes its niche in
the wardrobe of most businesswomen. Now it is hard to imagine that several
decades ago the dandy suit worn by a woman was considered the action to break
all proprieties.
Revolution for suits
The first dandy suit appeared in women’s wardrobe in the
20s, the times when the women were shocked by inventions of legendary Coco
Chanel. However, whatever authority was used by the talented Frenchwoman and
she failed then to cultivate the love of fashionmongers of that time to
trousers. The female dandy suit appeared as the regular consequence of the
total democratization of fashion and some emancipation of the society: women of
the 20s wore trousers along with men, hats and even single eye-glass, were keen
on sports and drove automobiles. On the whole, the end of the World War I
promoted the change of position of ladies in the society. The women of that
time had to replace men at the manufacture fighting at war and the fluffy skirt
or a long evening dress was a ridiculous garment.
The 30s was known to have another follower of female dandy
suits popular in show biz and cinematography. Marlene Dietrich who used to wear
men’s clothes in most movies she starred in preferred dandy ensembles to go to
public. Thanks to Marlene Dietrich and her exclusive popularity in USA and
Europe, the female dandy suit that went out of line though adherents to
conservative traditional fashion still considered that woman wearing trousers
was outrageous. Though, the World War II with the anticipated Great Depression
put the fashion disputes to end.
One of the committed admires of female dandy suits was the famous
Hollywood dive, the actress Katharine Hepburn. During the 50s the female dandy
suits were still considered unacceptable for most women and Katharine Hepburn
faced the troubles with objection of this trend. The actress who loved wearing
trousers had to enter the Claridges Hotel in London through the entry for
personnel since a woman in trousers was forbidden to enter the prestigious
building through the lobby.
The trend
for female dandy suits swiftly flourished in the 60s. The French couturier
Andre Courreges, all-known as the first designer of mini skirts along with Mary Quant, presented
the collection of female dandy suits for every day use with straight and skinny
long trousers. Courreges and the followers of this trend, being the reputed
fashion designers in the fashion world, put the female dandy suit to the level
when the American and European ladies showed high interest to it. Yet, in 1966 the
legendary French couturier Yves-Saint-Laurent finally presented the legendary
Le Smoking, a dandy suit for women for evening wear which became incredibly
elegant interpretation of the male smoking. Le Smoking by Yves-Saint-Laurent set
the standards for colleagues followed the designer and offered the stylish
alternative to the business women wear.
It is surprising
but the female dandy suits in collections of reputed fashion designers
never influenced
the positions of conservative society. So, in the early 70s women
wearing dandysuits were not allowed to some particular fashionable
restaurants in New York. The dandy suit found its niche in
democratic 90s in the wardrobe of a woman and now women are free to
appear at
restaurants and other public places, in the society and at work wearing
dandy
suits.
