Scarification: Back to Palms and Bananas

Sunday, 22 February 2009
scarificationScarification (scarifico means scratching in Latin) is one of the extreme body-art techniques, relatively recently practiced in Russia. Scarification came from Africa, the same as tattoo and piercing do. And against our will we are forced to believe that all the mankind is from Africa; both black and white since we keep adopting customs of ancient African tribes.

Nevertheless, in Africa scarification was exclusively practiced to express a person's social status or was a part of ritual to consecrate a boy to a man, while currently the fashion of scarification serves only for decoration purposes. This technique is used either to conceal an existing scar (far from being highly artistic and no decorating at all), or is only the wish to follow the fashion for extravagant and extreme body modification.

Scarification technique applies ordinary, convex, concave and deep kinds of scar.

An ordinary scar is made by a surgical scalpel, the cut is made crossing the skin and the scar may become quite invisible by time. The technique of an ordinary scar is relatively painless.

The convex (bulging) scar is made by a surgical scalpel and the incision is made at the particular angle, as compared with the ordinary scar. This technique is quite painful but it is thought that painkillers may affect the result, thus devoted fanatics of scarified beauty endure the whole scarification procedure without anesthetics.

The concave scar (a notch like scar) is made by a surgical scalpel by cutting the top layer of skin. Also, this is not a painless procedure; however there are people who endure this. Beauty knows no pain...

Deep scars are those remained from burns, and they are made by means of specific instruments. Such scars present an additional decoration element to other scars only, and individually as a single decoration are not practiced.

Scarification costs are fairly higher as compared with the cost for tattoo, even exceeding that even if it is made by the most elite professionals. Some amateurs of extreme body art decide for home-made scarification saving for the professional services. And this is not a good idea since specially made scars need the same healing, application of antiseptics and care as the real scars. A microbe on the scalpel - and you get less than elegant picture on your skin instead of delicate long-waited colorful scar. Hand trembles with the master, - and you have a real scar, that has nothing to do with the body art.

The forms of scars may vary from very simple lines to complicated highly artistic pictures. And this is another reason why you should go and have your skin scarified at the saloon but not at home by a primitive artist. A professional need to have a vision of the scar after it is healed; subject to skin features and metabolic process of the client, yet the final shape of the scar depend on the same. The appearance of the skin just after incision is not the final result of this procedure.

A professional master of scarification should know the basics of surgery otherwise he fails to make a desired picture. Also he should have steady nerves like medieval inquisitors, since the procedure is painful, bloody and the client may voice his feelings, and this always gets on the nerves, you know.

Nevertheless, irrespective of its bloody and painful peculiarities, scarification more comes into fashion today. Extreme and avant-garde amateurs rush to saloons to decorate their bodies with scars. As for women, they are motivated for scarification to look and stay sexual and provocative, the same as the commercial slogans appeal.

And those who are ready to endure scarification should bear in mind that scars are left forever. And such decoration is not possible to remove as a tattoo and it is not skinned over as a piercing. And once you have your skin scarified, you will have it forever without any break for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Therefore, prior to come to the specialized saloon and declare, «I want that scar in the circles and stripes!» - you should think again whether you really want it? From now and for the rest of your life?
You are young, beautiful, and you are willing to have an elegant scar picture on your tummy. But the youth does not last forever and this is sad to realize. The structure of skin changes, folds and wrinkles appear. Are you sure than your cool scar will look the same in twenty years, moreover taking into consideration that fashion is the changeable staff.  If yes, than go ahead, enjoy services of scarification professionals.
