If the stone is heated it spread nice
smell. But the imitations smelt like the mixture of plastic and amber. That

stones are made of like materials nearly same origin. But copal is just a few
hundred years ago, amber are million years old.
Amberoid which is just the pressed amber
made by hitting and fusing the small bit of the gem, you test it with the
microscope that it's a real amber gem.
If you rub it strongly with a piece of wool
it generates a stagnant charge. When it is warmed it will spread some specific
smell. But you cannot identify the difference between copal and amber by this
test.
To make a difference between amber and
copal-on a subtle spot of the stone, put a drop of acetone, keep it for three
seconds. Then wipe it off. Acetone will damage the copal surface. But the small
exposure will keep little or no change in amber.
Where it comes to you
We get majority of amber from Kaliningrad
(Konigsberg) an enclave of the Russian Federation, and some amounts from
Poland, Lithuania, Latvia and Germany. Nowadays many cottage industries are
founded in Poland. Amber is getting its glory again.
